Vraahk, also called the Impaler, is the Blight commander of the Scorched Legion and the main Locust antagonist of Gears of War: E-Day. He is voiced by Michael Briganti. You fight him in Act 5, Chapter 5, The Fall of Kalona, in two stages: on the east bridge, where you only need to take him to half health, and again at the detonator. Keep moving, avoid his grenades and Imulsion lanes, and shoot his head when it is exposed.
Who is Vraahk?

Vraahk is the Locust leader you hear about long before you face him. He commands the Scorched Legion, the force that tears through Kalona after Emergence Day, and he earns the name the Impaler by hunting down high-ranking Gears and city officials. Bravo Squad spends much of the later campaign a step behind him.
| Detail | Answer |
|---|---|
| Also known as | The Impaler |
| Role | Blight commander of the Scorched Legion; main antagonist |
| Voice actor | Michael Briganti (Metacritic credits) |
| First fought | Act 5, Chapter 5: The Fall of Kalona |
| Fight format | Two stages: east bridge, then the detonator |
He is a new character, not a returning one from the original trilogy, and he is distinct from RAAM, Skorge and Queen Myrrah. If you know the later games, the closest comparison is RAAM: a named, armored Locust commander who stalks the squad and turns up at the worst moments. The full cast, including the actor list, is on our cast page.
Where you meet him
Vraahk shadows Bravo through the later Acts before the fight. The confrontation itself is the last chapter of the game. After Resolute launches in Act 5, the east bridge controls fail, and the Impaler intercepts the squad on the way out. From there the route is: the bridge fight, a push through the Skytrain, and the second fight at the detonator.
Our chapter list shows how the five Act 5 chapters lead into this. If you are about to start The Fall of Kalona, stock up at the last weapon cache before the bridge; there is no shop or loadout screen once the fight starts.
Stage 1: the east bridge

The first stage starts as you drop from the control room window onto the bridge deck. You only need to bring Vraahk to half health for the fight to move on, so do not burn every heavy round here.
- Grenades are his main tool. He throws them to flush you from cover. When a grenade lands next to your position, roll to new cover instead of waiting it out.
- Do not reload in place once he is close. Reposition first, then reload behind fresh cover.
- Use your squad as bait. He can lock onto one squad member and chase them. That is your window to put damage into him from the side.
- Aim for the head whenever he exposes it after an attack. Body shots on his armor do far less damage.
Between the stages: the Skytrain
After the bridge, debris blocks the direct street route. Clear the enemies inside the Skytrain and follow the carriage to the far side. These are ordinary Locust, so use them to top up ammunition. Pick up anything with high single-shot damage, and if you find an Incinerator, keep it for stage two.
Stage 2: the detonator
The second fight takes place around the detonator, and this time his health bar has to be emptied. There is no third phase and no extra puzzle in the arena, so this is the last real test of the campaign.
- Move laterally. He advances directly on you; side-to-side movement between cover pieces keeps him from closing the gap.
- Do not return to cover he has already broken. Once he forces you out of a spot, choose a new one.
- Step out of Imulsion lanes immediately. He sprays Imulsion along three straight lines, and standing in them stacks damage.
- Use burn damage. The Incinerator is the best answer if you have it, because burning keeps hurting him while you move.
- Clear reinforcements first when they arrive, so they cannot pin you in place while he closes in.
Once he is down, activate the detonator straight away. The explosion clears the evacuation route and the game moves into the Epilogue. What that ending means for Marcus, Dom and the rest of Bravo Squad is covered, with full spoilers, in our ending explained page.
Best weapons and settings for the fight
Guide sites agree on the approach more than on exact loadouts. These are the weapons that suit the two arenas, based on community boss guides; use whatever you can fire accurately while moving.
| Weapon | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Incinerator | Burn damage continues while you reposition — the pick guide sites recommend |
| Breechshot | Heavy precision shots for the moments his head is exposed |
| Torque Bow | High single-shot damage from behind cover |
| Lancer / Hammerburst | Reliable damage between his attacks; ammo is plentiful |
| Your strongest weapon you can fire cleanly | Accuracy beats raw damage when you are moving constantly |
On higher difficulties, the fight is mostly about patience. If you keep dying, a lower difficulty or a co-op partner is far more effective than any trainer. Our beginner tips cover Active Reload timing, which adds noticeable damage across the fight.
Marcus vs Vraahk: who wins?
Bravo Squad, with Marcus at the center, defeats Vraahk. In co-op your partners fight alongside you, but the story frames it as Marcus's victory. The win is not the end of the war: Kalona is still lost, and the survivors still have to evacuate. Gears of War 1, set 14 years later, is a very different war.
Spoiler boundary: this page explains who Vraahk is and how to beat him. It does not describe the closing cutscenes. For those, use the ending page linked above.
