The short answer

Spoilers ahead. Bravo Squad defeats Vraahk, the Blight commander of the Scorched Legion, in a two-stage fight and triggers a detonator to clear an escape route — but Kalona is still lost. Survivors flee by boat to Port Ferrell to meet a convoy arranged by Anya Stroud, Dom decides he must go home to see his family, and Marcus admits he does not know what comes next, only that they have to keep fighting. There is only one ending.

This page describes the final boss, the last cutscenes and the fate of every main character. If you have not finished Act 5, come back once the credits roll.

The story covers three intense nights in the city of Kalona, starting with the first Locust attack on Emergence Day. The ending picks up three days after the emergence, when Kalona has already been torn apart. Everything below assumes you have played through The Fall of Kalona, the final chapter.

The final boss: Vraahk

The final enemy is Vraahk, a bloodthirsty Blight commander of the Scorched Legion, also known as the Impaler. He is fought in two stages. The first happens as you leave a control room, and you only need to bring him down to half health.

After you cross the bridge he returns with that half of his health, and this time you have to finish him. His head is the weak spot, and he sprays Imulsion along three straight lines that stack damage if you stand in them. Keep moving and stay out of those lanes.

  • Bridge fight: Vraahk uses grenades to flush you out of cover, so do not stay in one spot. Watch for grenades, keep your distance and reload while moving rather than in the open.
  • Detonator fight: pick two positions in advance — where you are shooting from and where you will fall back to — and move before he charges. Do not return to cover he has already pushed you out of, and spend any heavy weapon you are still holding.

Once Vraahk is down, activate the detonator immediately. The explosion clears the escape route that the rest of the ending depends on. For the bosses that come before him, see our walkthrough.

Dom and Marcus before the last fight

Before the final push, there is a key moment between the two leads. Dom is ready to sacrifice himself and asks Marcus to remember his family. Marcus refuses to let that happen, telling Dom he will not lose him the way he lost Carlos.

That line pays off a thread running through the whole game. Carlos Santiago was Dom's older brother and Marcus's closest friend, and his death in the Pendulum Wars is something Marcus has carried since. Marcus calls Dom his brother and insists they see it through together.

What happens after the battle

The ending is not a victory. Three days after the Locust emerged, Kalona has been destroyed, and the battle only buys enough time for people to escape. Surviving civilians and Gears leave the fallen city by boat.

Their destination is Port Ferrell, where reinforcements and a convoy should be waiting. The convoy was arranged by Anya Stroud, and the squad notes that she is Helena Stroud's daughter. From Port Ferrell, the plan is to move inland to higher ground.

There is also a quieter payoff on the boat. A set of COG tags taken earlier in the story is handed back to its owner, closing out a smaller subplot on a hopeful note.

The final scene explained

In the last scene, Dom tells Marcus he needs to go home and see the damage for himself. Marcus understands. They saved many lives, but they also lost the city, and both of them know it was not enough.

Looking at Kalona burning, Dom asks whether the invasion can even be stopped. Marcus says he does not know — but if they stop fighting, the whole world ends up like Kalona. The game closes on that resolve rather than on a win.

Dom's urge to go home was set up early. Xbox's campaign preview established that Dom is married to Maria and worried about his family in Ephyra. The ending turns that worry into his next step.

How the ending connects to Gears of War 1

E-Day is set 14 years before the original Gears of War. The Coalition describes the game's events as retroactively laying the foundation for the rest of the series. The ending deliberately frames Emergence Day as the start of the war, not its end.

Several threads lead forward. Anya Stroud is a long-running series character who serves as a COG communications officer from the first game onward. Marcus's father, Adam Fenix, is described as a noted war veteran and the creator of the Hammer of Dawn.

IGN pointed out that a gap of roughly ten years remains between E-Day and the moment Marcus is imprisoned, four years before the original game. That window has not been filled, and the ending leaves room for it. Nothing has been announced about a sequel or DLC, so treat any claims otherwise with caution.

Only names confirmed in the game's cutscenes or official material are listed here. Some guides attach a specific name to the returned COG tags, but the cutscene itself does not confirm it, so we leave it out.

What the ending means

E-Day ends on a loss on purpose. The squad wins its fight but the city falls, which reframes Emergence Day as the first day of a long war. It explains why the world of the original game is so devastated.

It also completes the emotional arc between Marcus and Dom. The guilt Marcus carries over Carlos becomes a promise to protect Dom, and their bond is what the finale is really about. Dom's choice to go home shows that family is now the stakes for both of them.

Are there multiple endings?

No. There is only one ending, and the story is fixed and linear. Collecting every item before the final chapter does not unlock a secret ending.

The epilogue is unlocked by finishing the campaign and has nothing to do with multiplayer progress. If you want to rewatch the ending, full cutscene compilations are available, or you can replay the final chapter from the campaign menu. Collectible hunters should see our collectibles guide for what is worth going back for.
