Choose the Xbox app if you want PC Game Pass access or an eligible digital purchase that also covers Xbox console through Play Anywhere. Choose Steam if you want a Steam library purchase. A Steam key does not grant an Xbox license, and shared progression is not the same as ownership on another storefront.
Steam vs Xbox app at a glance

| Your priority | Route to check | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Steam library ownership | Steam store or a suitable Steam key | Adds the game to your Steam account |
| PC subscription access | Xbox app with PC Game Pass or Ultimate | Check current subscription eligibility |
| One digital purchase for PC and console | Xbox / Windows Store Play Anywhere edition | Eligible ownership spans those platforms |
| A third-party code | The exact platform on the listing | Steam and Xbox codes are different products |
| Trying a Steam purchase with a refund option | Buy directly on Steam | Valve does not refund outside CD-key purchases |
These are ownership and purchase differences, not a performance ranking. This comparison does not claim that one store runs faster. Use PC requirements and PC settings to evaluate the hardware side.
Does buying on Steam also give you the Xbox version?
Do not treat a Steam purchase as an Xbox console license. Xbox’s Play Anywhere rules describe eligible digital games purchased through the Xbox Store, Windows Store or participating digital-code retailers. For those purchases, signing into the same Microsoft account gives access on supported Xbox and Windows devices.
E-Day’s official Xbox page lists Play Anywhere support. If using both PC and a console is your main goal, check that badge and the seller’s redemption platform before paying. A listing that says PC alone does not tell you whether the code is for Steam or the Xbox app.
Keep three questions separate: can the platforms play together, can progress follow an account, and does that account own a playable copy on both platforms? Crossplay or shared progress does not automatically answer the ownership question.
Does PC Game Pass unlock E-Day on Steam?
Xbox lists E-Day with PC Game Pass and Game Pass Ultimate. For PC subscription access, use the Xbox app. Buying on Steam is a separate purchase decision. If you already have a qualifying subscription, check your Xbox app library before paying for a second copy.
A subscription is access while its entitlement remains valid, not a permanent base-game purchase. If you cancel or change plans, check whether you still have access before buying DLC. The Premium Upgrade guide explains why an upgrade is not a substitute for the base game.
Steam key, Xbox code or upgrade?
- Read the platform field on the actual product page rather than just the search-result title.
- Identify the full Standard or Premium Edition, or an upgrade that needs a base game.
- Check the activation countries for the account that will redeem it.
- Compare the final checkout total and the seller’s refund terms.
- Keep the receipt and use the redemption instructions for that platform.
For Instant Gaming searches and other third-party offers, use our Steam key checklist. We do not verify stock merely because a seller appears in search results. A historical comparison price is not a current checkout quote.
Which refund policy applies?
Valve normally accepts Steam-store game refund requests within 14 days of purchase with less than two hours played. Its refund policy says it cannot refund purchases made outside Steam, including third-party CD keys. A key seller’s policy therefore matters before redemption.
For an Xbox-store order, use Microsoft’s order and support flow and check the terms applying to that purchase. Do not apply Valve’s conditions to a different storefront. For a subscription, check cancellation and billing terms separately from a game purchase.
Moving between PC and console
For eligible Play Anywhere ownership, Xbox says saves, achievements and add-ons travel with the same account. Before switching machines, finish the session and let any cloud sync complete. Confirm that you signed into the account that owns the game on the destination device.
If switching to Steam, confirm your playable entitlement there first. Our Steam guide covers the account-linking and invitation questions; this page focuses on purchase choice. Back up important local data where supported and avoid assuming that linking an account creates a second license.
Which version should you choose?
- Already using PC Game Pass? Check the Xbox app first.
- Playing on PC and Xbox console? An eligible Play Anywhere digital purchase is the route to compare.
- Keeping purchases in Steam? Compare the direct Steam offer and refund policy before a third-party key.
- Buying only an upgrade? Confirm the existing base game and matching platform.
- Choosing for FPS? Store choice alone is not benchmark evidence; check hardware and settings.
Continue with the PC overview for features or the Series S checklist for getting started on that console. Both routes lead to the same campaign, but your entitlement and store support remain specific to the purchase you made.
